(Left to right) Stella, Lidia, & Verna

There are moments in life that invite us to pause, moments that quietly call us to reflect on the passage of time, the gift of life, and the legacy each person leaves behind. Celebrating a 100th birthday is one of those rare and meaningful occasions.

Globally, the average life expectancy is approximately 73 years, while in Canada it is closer to 81. To live up to a century and beyond is not only uncommon, but a profound blessing, one marked by resilience, faithfulness, and a lifetime of stories that have helped shape families, communities, and generations. At Sherwood Care, we have had the honour of caring for 40 centenarians over the last 20 years, the oldest of whom was 108 years of age. We have recently had the distinct privilege of celebrating three remarkable residents currently living at our facility, who have each reached this extraordinary milestone. Verna, our oldest resident, has recently turned 104, and shared with us the break down of her life into segments, saying that she spends about 5% of her time eating, 25% working (maybe?), 30% sleeping, and about 40% of her time looking for things she had just a minute ago”. Her sense of humour is still in tact. Lydia and Stella are both 100 years old. Their lives stand as quiet testimonies of endurance and wisdom, reminding us that each year is a gift, and every stage of life carries with it, dignity and value.

This celebration was more than just recognizing their age; it was an opportunity to honour the values that define Sherwood Care, the respect, the responsibility, and the faithful service in caring for each of our residents. We are incredibly humbled to walk alongside these residents, learning from their stories and cherishing the lives they continue to live among us.

Moments like these keeps us looking forward with renewed purpose. Through God’s provision, Sherwood Care has entering a new season of growth, one that will allow us to expand our capacity, more than doubling the number of residents we can serve, while introducing additional programs, including dedicated hospice and palliative care. This development reflects a deepened commitment to care for individuals and families with compassion, dignity, and Christ-centered love in every stage of life.

As this vision moves forward, we are grateful for the support of our Seventh-day Adventist church community and warmly invite you to take part in what God is doing through Sherwood Care. Whether through prayer, presence, or financial giving, your partnership helps make this unique mission possible. We encourage you to learn more and to contribute at www.sherwoodcare.com/donate/, joining us in extending care, comfort, and hope to those entrusted to us.
