From May 8–10, the first Ukrainian Adventist Congress in Canada was held at the Foothills Camp & Retreat Centre, bringing together approximately 250 participants from across the country under the theme, “Faith Through the Centuries.”
One of the most meaningful aspects of the congress was the presence of descendants of the first waves of Ukrainian immigrants to Canada, whose families arrived in the early 20th century. Through heartfelt testimonies, participants learned about the beginnings of the Ukrainian Adventist movement in Canada, including the historic baptism of 19 individuals in 1919 and the founding of the first Ukrainian Adventist church, “Pobida” (“Victory”).
The program also featured a documentary about Theophil Babiyenko, the first ordained Adventist minister in Ukraine. Following persecution by the Russian Empire because of their faith, his family immigrated to Canada, where his son later established the first Ukrainian Adventist church in the country.
Throughout the weekend, attendees experienced a spirit of unity, spiritual renewal, and Christian fellowship. Special programs were organized for children, while youth gathered for an inspiring Saturday evening worship and music event.
A particularly joyful moment of the congress was the baptism of three individuals who publicly dedicated their lives to God.
On Sabbath afternoon, participants were blessed through a special concert program, and later in the evening many gathered around the campfire for fellowship, testimonies, and meaningful conversations.
Sunday’s program concluded the congress on a deeply spiritual note through inspiring messages shared by keynote speaker Marian Kossovan. Families also enjoyed horseback riding, recreational activities, and a handmade crafts fair that brought warmth and joy to participants of all ages.
As the congress came to a close, many expressed gratitude to God and a strong desire to gather again for the second Ukrainian Adventist Congress in Canada. The event became more than a retreat — it marked the beginning of a meaningful movement of faith, heritage, and unity among Ukrainian Adventists across Canada.
